As a Christian school, we want serving Christ to be a way of life for us at Mt. Salus Christian School.  I am so proud of our entire school.  In the last two weeks our students have been involved in serving in several amazing ways:

• • In collaboration with Christ Covenant, First Presbyterian Day School (FPDS), Hartfield Academy, and Mt. Salus over 200 Flood Buckets, 300 hygiene kits, and general items such as water, diapers, cleaning supplies, hygiene items, tools, etc were collected to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey (and now Irma).  The flood buckets and hygiene kits will be used by the MNA (Mission North America) and general items were given to the Jones County Baptist Association to be distributed to groups assisting in hurricane relief.

  • On Friday, September 8th during chapel times, our entire school helped in making hygiene kits.  The elementary (K3-5th) during their chapel time helped organize all the donated items into appropriate groupings.  Then during the high school chapel (6th-12th), the students assembled the hygiene kits for use by the MNA.  We assembled 83 hygiene kits and another 170 that are partially complete (they lack Hand towels and fingernail clippers—which we hope to finish this week).  This means our school with the help of Providence Presbyterian Church will make nearly 250 hygiene kits.  This is such a great way to serve Christ by serving those in need!  Thank you parents and students for making this happen (go to our FB page to see more pictures of students serving).
  • In addition to assembling hygiene kits, on Friday we had two groups of young men from the Junior and Senior Class help serve.  One group went to the Center for Pregnancy Choices (CPC) in Jackson with Coach Mitchell and helped move furniture and boxes that needed to be rearranged for about 3 hours.  The other group helped Active Impact International collect 112 flood buckets and 160 hygiene kits from Mt. Salus, First Presbyterian Day School, Christ Covenant, and Hartfield Academy and deliver them to Lakeland Presbyterian Church (an MNA site).  We are thankful to these young men for giving of their time and helping.
  • We are thankful to Noah and one of his friends for taking the time to pressure wash the Mt. Salus school bus on Saturday. It looks amazing!
  • We are thankful to students who are stepping up to the plate and serving at our school: breaking down tables and chairs and helping us keep our facilities clean.
  • On behalf of Mt. Salus Christian School, I would like to express our appreciation and gratefulness to Christ Covenant, First Presbyterian Day School, and Hartfield Academy for collaborating with us as Christian schools to reach out to those in need from Hurricane Harvey.  Thank you so much!

Service is going to be an ongoing event here at Mt. Salus.  I am grateful to be part of this school and see teachers, staff, students, and parents working together.  My prayer is that we will continue to serve Christ and be used by Him for His work.

Dear Mt. Salus Parents and Students,

At Mt. Salus we want serving to be a way of life.  As the year starts, we are already getting requests for service.  I am excited about this and we will be sharing about these opportunities as they arise.  Many of these service opportunities will be grade specific, but at this time we do have an opportunity for the entire school: Hurricane Harvey.

As many of you know, Hurricane Harvey has devastated parts of Texas and Louisiana with the storm and the rain aftermath.  Many families have lost homes and business.  Students from kindergarten to college will be in limbo about their education path for the next several weeks to months.  In 2005 I remember how Katrina affected MS and Louisiana (my family and friends).  With this in mind, I want us to be servants of Christ and be willing to help those in need.  So how can we help?

We are partnering with Active Impact International and will collect needed items for hygiene kits which will be distributed to MNA (relief agency):

• bar of soap, comb, toothpaste, toothbrush, nail file, nail clippers, wash cloth, hand towel, bandaids (for hygiene kits)
• tools (something that will be needed once homes are cleaned/reconstruction–will be distributed by organizations focusing on clean-up)
• diapers (given to relief agencies requesting them)

Students can bring these items to their first period/home room teacher.  We plan to make hygiene kits next week during chapel.  We need your help and support–PLEASE send the needed hygiene items.

Active Impact will then collect these items and distribute them to organizations (MNA and Baptist Associations/Churches) who are directly helping those in need.  We will get the students involved in making the hygiene kits as needed for relief agencies.  Let us do our part and help donate needed items on the list.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  Through Active Impact International, we have reached out to several Christian schools to help in this Harvey Hurricane Effort (one school is aiming for 200 hygiene kits and another is aiming for 300 Flood Buckets).  Our goal is to make as many hygiene kits as possible (the link is below).  Let us be active and make an impact through Christ for those in need.

We’re excited to welcome Andrew Mitchell to the Mt. Salus family this year! We asked him to share a bit about himself and what brought him to Mt. Salus.

How long have you been teaching and coaching?

I’ve been teaching and coaching for 4 years.

Where did you first start teaching and coaching?

I got my start at Jackson Prep.

What brought you to Mt. Salus?

I was drawn to the opportunity to teach and coach in a Christian school setting combined with the opportunity to be involved with non-profit organization Active Impact International.

What will you be teaching at Mt. Salus?

I will be teaching Bible classes, Old and New Testament, and will also serve as the Geography/ Health education teacher for the 9th grade

What are you looking forward to accomplish at Mt. Salus while here?

I look forward to seeing students grow in their knowledge and passion for the Lord through His Word. I also desire to see the athletic programs continue to succeed and positively impact our students.

As a basketball coach, how do you see God using this gift in your life?

I primarily see basketball as a tool to get into the lives of young people to impact their lives for the Lord Jesus.

Besides Mt. Salus, and since your moving to Clinton, what other areas do you hope to get involved?

Combined with my opportunity at Mt. Salus, I will be involved in a non-profit organization called Active Impact International. The mission of Active Impact is to actively impact and outreach the world for Christ. We plan to do this through youth sports, short term mission trips, and community counseling. I’m excited to serve as the sports director for this group and look forward to seeing how the Lord can use Active Impact to make a difference in the lives of those in Clinton and beyond.

The new school year is off to a good start. Our back to school night was a great event with good participation. I was excited to meet the families of our students. I am thankful to be working with great teachers and staff. Parents and family it is our privilege to partner with you to teach your children from a Christian worldview. Our vision is to challenge our students to think critically and creatively to be prepared for what God has in store for them.

With this vision in mind, I am excited about the support and endorsement from the Mt. Salus school board to begin our pilot program of 1:1 Apple computers for students in the 10th-12th grade. By integrating technology into our curriculum our students will be better prepared for their next phase in life that God has for them. As we implement this new phase into our school, there will be a learning curve by students, teachers, staff, and parents. But we are excited to do this because we see the need to prepare our students. From taking notes to sending papers electronically (less use of paper) to projects and learning resources, computers in the hands of students are a great benefit. In the same token, we also must teach students the dangers of technology and the importance of being wise in our decisions in how we use this technology.

In the coming days, more information will be sent to families about the implementation of this program. Stay posted.

As the new Head of School at Mt. Salus Christian School, I would like to welcome you to our Mt. Salus Family.  This is the school that first gave me the opportunity to teach, coach, and be an AD and I think of it as family.  I left here viewing this school as part of a greater family.  On my return, I have the same feeling. 

My prayer and hope is that under God’s grace we will continue to foster this family environment.  Your child has been created by God for a purpose.  Here at Mt. Salus we strive to teach in a manner that allows your child to grow and learn academically and spiritually.  Our teaching is based on a Christian worldview. Our desire is that your child leaves here having had a great academic experience and to have grown, been challenged, and developed stronger in their faith through the Bible. 

We live in challenging times where the Christian faith is coming under attack not only around the World but in our own backyard.  We want our students to leave here with a greater appreciation for their faith, so that once they leave our doors, they will continue on in their journey and growth in Christ, no matter where the Lord leads them.

As we begin this new school year I am looking forward to some great new opportunities we will be offering:

• 4 dual enrollment classes (Art Appreciation, Spanish, English, and Advanced Science )
• An elementary program for gifted students–LEAP (Learning Enrichment Acceleration Program)
• Service opportunities ranging from local Christian ministries to foreign mission trips
• Leadership Class: students will meet on a weekly basis to discuss leadership and how to become better leaders in our community
• Integrated Elementary technology education
• After school enrichment clubs
• Growing our elementary and high school athletic program
• Fellowship of Christian Athletes
