The Fall of Mankind (Genesis 2:16-17)

I.  Man is given the command by God not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 

II. Satan distorts the truth:
A. “Did God really say…”  Satan plants seeds of doubt.
B.  Promises their eyes will be opened – a delight to the eyes.
C. “You will be like God”—you can know good and evil.B



III. What is sin?
  A.  There are two types
    1. Sin is not doing what God commands
    2. Sin is doing what God forbids.
 
B. When we sin we are essentially saying: “God, I know better than you
what I should or should not do.  I know what is good for me and you
don’t.”
  C.  All Sin is rebellion against God.  We replace God’s rules with our own.  (Define Autonomy)

IV. What were the effects of the fall on the following?
A.  Man? – Work is made more difficult, the ground is cursed (the cultural mandate is made    difficult.)
B.  Woman? Pain is increased in childbirth.  (Her role in the creation mandate is made difficult)

C.  Relationships?
1.  Woman wants to exercise authority over husband.  Conflict will characterize marriage (and other relationships)
2. Mankind in his sin lost communion and a personal relationship with God.  This is the most important result of the fall.

D. The World? Sin, corruption and Death were spread to all of the creation (Romans 8:22)

E. Adam’s descendants? All of his descendants inherit his sinfulness, are guilty and deserve death. (Ephesians 2:1-3)

Adam and Eve’s Family

I. After the fall there is hope (Genesis 3:15)
A.  There will be hatred between the “descendants” of Satan and the descendants of the woman.
B. The Child born of a woman would crush the serpent’s head, and the serpent would bruise His heel.
C. This descendant would come to destroy the works of the devil on the world.   He reverses the effects of the fall on the world by making all things new. (Romans 5:12-19, I Cor. 15:20-28, I John 3:8, Revelation 21:1-5, 22:1-5)

II. Two families. (I John 3:10-15)
A. Children of God- these are the people that love God, and obey Him as their Father.  They hate sin, because they want to be just like their Father.
B. Children of the Devil- these people hate God and His family like their father, Satan.  They enjoy sinning and do not desire to obey God.
